LEAF-Linking Landscape, Environment, Agriculture and Food is hosted by the School of Agriculture (ISA), University of Lisbon, and is located within Tapada da Ajuda campus, Lisbon. LEAF is organised into 3 Research Groups, supported by 97 integrated researchers and 153 active collaborators, the latter including PhD students:

  • G1 - Resource Management & Landscape Architecture
  • G2 - Plant Science & Crop Production
  • G3 - Food & Feed

Current LEAF’s structure resumes a pyramid based on landscape and natural resources up to consumer/societal needs. the whole food chain is comprehensively covered stepping on Landscape Planning; Soil and Water Management; Plant Animal and Food Sciences; concluding at Food &Feed Processing to impact consumer's health. The pyramid 3D dimensions are defined by Climate Neutrality, Bioeconomy and Planetary Health, including Smart and Digital drivers. This demonstrates our global value chain approach from the territory to people, using SMART thinking at different scales, from biomolecules and cells to precision agriculture and landscape planning.

For 2025-29, 5 Focal Strategic Areas (FSAs) of research were co-created with our Stakeholder and Scientific Advisory Boards and discussed at the Scientific Council. Aligned with relevant national and international frameworks, LEAF is uniquely positioned to provide groundbreaking evidence to support a sustainable and competitive agri-food sector through 5 FSAs:
