Miguel Bugalho

Scientific Coordinator and of the Wildlife Management Research Area

Email: migbugalho(a#t)isa.ulisboa.pt

Miguel Bugalho is Principal Investigator at the Centre for Applied Ecology "Prof. Baeta Neves " (CEABN) and Assistant Professor of Forest and Wildllife Ecology and Conservation at the Department of Natural Resources and Environment, School of Agriculture (ISA), University of Lisbon. He has a PhD in Zoology from the University of Aberdeen and the Macaulay Land Use Research Institute, UK, an MSc in Ecology from the University of Aberdeen, UK, and a first degree in Forestry, Natural Resource Management, from the Technical University of Lisbon, Portugal. He has had Post-doctoral experience in CSIRO, Australia and the Nicholas School of Environment, Duke University, USA. Miguel Bugalho currently leads a group of 5 PhD students and 1 post-doctoral associate.

Research Interests

Miguel Bugalho research interests rely on the field of animal ecology and in particularly on the foraging ecology of large mammalian herbivores. He is interested in knowing how different herbivores, namely wild ruminants, use plant resources and how plants and ecosystems respond to these animals. This may provide opportunities for using herbivores as habitat management tools. Miguel Bugalho also collaborates with the Mediterranean Program of the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), a global non-governmental conservation organization, through which he developed research interests on the field of sustainable management of forest ecosystems. He is particularly interested in knowing how forest management affects the conservation of biodiversity and ecosystem services of Mediterranean evergreen oak woodlands.

Through a partnership with the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) I am coordinating a project on mapping the natural capital of cork oak and other forest ecosystems. We developed a WebGIS tool (www.habeas-med.org) which identifies important areas for the conservation of biodiversity and of ecosystem services. This is important to set up priority areas for conservation, for forest certification or to implement mechanisms for rewarding good ecosystem management practices (Payment for Ecosystem Services schemes).
