Resumo:
This talk is structured in two parts, with the first one addressing the current use of UAS in conservation biology and the second one presenting the new advances that I think would lead the future of UAS in environmental research. Both parts are enriched with practical examples of UAS work performed in protected areas of Spain and South Africa.
1) The present of UAS in conservation biology: management and assessment.
UAS for management. This line of work has a practical approach and tries to solve already well-known environmental problems on the short term, in efficient and immediate ways. I will provide several examples of UAS applications in this context, such as minimizing infrastructures impact for raptors or integrating the systems on rhinoceros anti-poaching work.
UAS for assessment. This line of work has a theoretical approach in the frame of ecology and includes research for a better understanding on processes that would help detecting environmental problems, assessing their scope and trying to find suitable solutions in the medium term time scale. Here I will present some examples on the use of UAS for wildlife monitoring in protected areas, for habitat selection of a reintroduced raptor species, and for modeling ungulates’ spatial distribution.
2) The future of UAS in conservation biology: new payloads and Internet of Things.
New payloads: most of the current UAS applications are based on the use of UAS as “flying cameras”. I will discuss and provide some examples of more innovative payloads (e.g. insect traps, water sampling devices, tagged animals data gathering) that open interesting possibilities for environmental monitoring.
To conclude, I will explain an example of UAS integration into Internet of Things and involving the cooperation of “Smart objects” for pollution monitoring in a protected area.
