Research has been conducted to improve knowledge on key mechanisms of coffee immunity and fungal pathogenicity, combining the areas of cell biology, metabolomics, proteomics, transcriptomics and functional genomics.

As an ultimate goal it is expect to identify biomarkers putatively linked to coffee durable resistance to Hemileia vastatrix and Colletotrichum kahawae to be used in the breeding programmes.
