The first workshop of the BIOECOSYS project (“Forest ecosystem management decision making methods an integrated bioeconomic approach to sustainability”) took place March 14 at the Portuguese Catholic University in Porto.

BIOECOSYS is a national project funded by FEDER and FCT, and has as partners, the School of Agriculture and the School of Sciences from the University of Lisbon, the Portuguese Catholic University and the Polytechnic Institute of Leiria.

The coordenator of the Project is The CEF Reseracher and Coordenator, José Calvão Borges.

The project aims at bringing together multidisciplinary state-of-the-art knowledge on forest ecosystem models, forest ecosystem management planning methods and non-market forest-services payments mechanisms, to design tools that may help forest policy and decision makers address current challenges to the forest sector. Namely, it aims at promoting landscape-level joint management planning and at increasing the supply of ecosystem services.

This workshop involved two main activities: a) the presentation of the project and of management planning tools to BIOECOSYS case study area stakeholders (knowledge sharing) and b) computer labs where stakeholders used those tools to select bundles of ecosystem services under alternative climate scenarios (capacity building).
