Pieter-Jan is a Ph.D. student in Sustainable Land Use at the School of Agriculture of the University of Lisbon (PT) with specialization in environmental sciences. He is a scholarship holder within the EU-funded DeSIRA-Malmon project: Mangroves, mangrove rice, mangrove people: sustainably improving rice production, ecosystems, and livelihoods. His main fields of research interest are human ecology, ethnobiology, and political ecology, linking conservation, socio-environmental changes, and local development using an ethnographic field-based approach. His PhD project focuses on small-scale mangrove fishing across coastal Guinea-Bissau.
