The PhD thesis entitled “Characterization of Spodoptera frugiperda Smith (Lepidoptera, Noctuidae) population for mating disruption control method in Cape Verde maize fields” investigates the population dynamics and genetic characterization of strains of the cartridge caterpillar, an invasive species and maize pest recently detected in Africa. The study focuses on monitoring this species, analyzing the genetic variation of local populations and evaluating the effectiveness of commercial sex pheromones, with the aim of developing sustainable control strategies. The focus is on applying the sexual confusion method to minimize the damage caused by this pest to the maize crop of small producers in Cape Verde, in line with research interests in integrated pest management, especially biological control and ecological methods that are safer for the environment.
