CEF members José G. Borges and Emin Zeki Baskent collaborated on a study into the sustainable management and governance of non-timber forest products
“Sustainable Management and Governance of Non-Wood Forest Products: Unlocking Their Potential” is the title of the article published by Forest Research Centre – Centro de Estudos Florestais (CEF) – collaborator Emin Zeki Baskent (ForChange group) and CEF ForChange group researcher José G. Borges, in collaboration with Davide M. Pettenella (University of Padova, Italy) and Yu Wei (Colorado State University, USA).
The article was published in the special issue of Forest magazine “Non-Wood Forest Products Management: Inventory, Planning, Governance, Marketing, and Trade”, which compiles some of the main results of research initiatives that contribute to understanding the long-term effect of forestry operations focused on non-wood forest products (NWFPs) in different regions and contexts.
In this new article, the authors conclude that the non-wood forest products (NWFPs)-related knowledge management, including the traditional knowledge associated with awareness creation, training activities, and advanced management tools, are necessary for supporting rural development based on responsible use of forest resources. A scenario and trade-off analysis with an appropriate decision support systems (DSS) in coordination with other sectors (e.g., agriculture, health, food, tourism) is vital for addressing the interests of various stakeholder groups.
