Deadlines
The call is open between December 28th, 2017 and February 12th, 2018.
Eligible applicants
The call is open to the following candidates: a) Portuguese citizens or citizens of other European Union countries; b) citizens of third countries living in Portugal in the terms laid out by Law Nr. 23/2007, July 4th, modified by Law Nr. 29/2012, August 9th; c) citizens of third countries with which Portugal has reciprocity agreements; and d) citizens of other countries provided that the candidate undergoes a panel interview.
Admission requirements
Applicants must have cumulatively:
- Master's degree or equivalent or a 5-year graduate diploma with scientific or professional experience;
- above average diploma classification or research and professional skills;
- proficiency in English (oral and written).
Application procedure
The applications should be submitted by electronic mail accompanied with the following documents (in English):
- detailed curriculum vitae (CV);
- application form and structured CV as in the EXCEL form available in the SUSFOR website;
- degrees’ certificates with official transcripts of records and other relevant documents of the academic path;
- statement of future career objectives and relation with the selected priority research areas of the doctoral programme;
- contacts from two persons who know the academic/professional path of the applicant and that will be contacted if additional information on the candidate will be needed;
- a statement of acceptance of a potential remote interview.
Applicants with an academic degree obtained abroad must submit a document from the Direção-Geral do Ensino Superior, or from a public Portuguese University with the degree recognition/equivalence and conversion of the final grades to the Portuguese classification scale, whenever there is a final classification (Law nr. 341/2004, from October 12th) or, instead, a document from a public Portuguese University with the recognition or equivalence of academic qualifications (Law nr. 283/83, from June 21st).

The applications must be sent to the electronic address of the Doctoral Programme (susfor@isa.ulisboa.pt) with the subject SUSFOR2017 Application.
Selection will be made in two phases with the following criteria:
1st phase: curricular evaluation
- Quality of the academic path;
- Research experience (e.g. publications, and contracts or grants in research projects, expressed as the annual average after completing MSc), and/or Professional career (e.g. work in public or private institutions or NGO’s relevant for the SUSFOR topics, expressed per year after completing MSc);
- Quality of the applicant’s statement in relation to the selected priority areas;
- Overall fit to the doctoral programme and namely to the selected priority areas.
Each criteria will be classified 1 to 5, and a first step score (C1) given by a weighed average with the following weights: A: 30%, B: 30%, C: 20%, D: 20%. A ranked list of the 12 candidates with the best C1 classification will be prepared to proceed to the 2nd phase of selection.
2nd phase: interview
A classification from 1 to 5 (C2) will be given as a result of an interview and the information given by the endorsement persons (if necessary).
The final score (CF) combines the first and second step scores with the following weights: C1 70%, C2 30%.
Publicizing and notification
The final evaluation results in the form of a ranked list will be made public by posting at Instituto Superior de Agronomia and website address http://www.isa.ulisboa.pt/ensino/pd-f/susfor. All the candidates will be notified by electronic mail.
In the case of an unfavorable grant award decision, the applicants have a period of 10 work days after disclosure, to appeal as a preliminary hearing, following the Portuguese "Código do Procedimento Administrativo". After the final decision, an appeal to Fundação para a Ciência e a
Tecnologia, I.P. can be made within 15 work days after notification.
