My research interests are in the growth dynamics of mixed-stand species and their ecological interaction and competition. I have been applying methodologies, tools and models to assess the carbon balance in plantations and naturally regenerated mixed-species ecosystems in Portugal.
I am simulating the behaviour of forest species in mixtures with: i) an ecophysiological model developed in the Montana University, USA, called Biome-BGC; ii) using a dynamic model of species interactions, the software Simile, developed in the Naples University.
Due to the wildfire problems that we have had in Portugal every year, I am also interested in the research of how mixed-stands species could be a better solution to mitigate this problem.
As a researcher at CEABN-InBIO I am also working in the European project called DIABOLO (http://diabolo-project.eu/) that deals with harmonising forest and biodiversity indicators through the countries in Europe based on data from National Forest Inventories.
I am passionate about identifying plant species and their characteristics and monitoring ecosystems biodiversity.
